635,202. Lasting-machines. SCHNETZER, K. Dec. 10, 1945, No. 33374. [Class 17 (i)] Apparatus for conforming a pre-welted shoe upper to a last 6, Figs. 1, 2, and for securing it to an insole thereon, by cement, comprises one or more cement-tracking devices R each having separately operable and adjustable tacking heads 30, disposed around the last, projecting parts of which heads press the edge of the upper and insole into contact after the application of cement, the parts being retained in contact by wire cables 58, which are moved into pressing position by fluid actuated means. The cement tacking device may work in conjunction with a rotary carrier on which the last may be mounted, or a pair of tacking devices may be provided to deal with a pair of shoes, the tacked shoes being held under pressure on the carrier until the cement has set and then fed around to drying position by the carrier. The toe tacking head 30 is mounted on a support 23 longitudinally adjustable for different sizes and, like the other head, is secured to a piston rod 32, piston 33 of which is hydraulically movable in a pivotally mounted cylinder 34, and all the heads are moved thereby to operative position. A cam track 39 in a fork 40 which is adjustable vertically and horizontally clamps the toe tacking head in position. Cables 58 which guide the heads 30 into position are tensioned by hydraulically actuated piston 52 which is returned to release tension when the fluid pressure is released by a spring 53.
