Apparatus for purifying sewage and the like comprises an aerating tank, a rotary electrically-driven aerating member located in the tank, and a clock-controlled switch in circuit with the drive for the aerating member whereby the member will be caused to rotate for a predetermined period and then be stationary for a predetermined period so that the sewage is subjected to periods of induced aeration with intervening idle periods in cyclic rotation.
