639,634. Cylinders ; four-stroke engines. WESLAKE, H. Feb. 18,1948, No. 4833. [Class 7 (ii)] Air or a weak mixture is admitted by a valve 28 over the cylinder, and rich mixture by a valve 29 in a side pocket which is either opposed to the exhaust valve 25 or placed at the side thereof, the two valves being then in either the lower or the upper face of the pocket. The air or weak mixture is admitted by a passage 34 arranged to produce swirl round the cylinder axis and the rich mixture passage is arranged to produce swirl transverse to the cylinder axis, which is facilitated by the side pocket having a curved end 16, in which the sparking plug is located. The pocket has parallel side walls and may have a transverse roof, and the combustion space is completed by a cavity 38 on the piston or cylinder head. The valves 28, 29 are inclined so as to be operated by rockers mounted on the same shaft 32 and the timing is such that the rich mixture and exhaust valves are not open at the same time, a particular timing being specified.
