Improvements in or relating to clear, smooth-surfaced, bubble-free castings of a polymerized vinylidene compound and method of producing same

Clear bubble-free castings of a polymeric vinylidene compound are produced by dissolving nitric oxide or a nitric oxide generating material, e.g. isoamyl nitrite, in a liquid monomeric vinylidene compound which is then polymerized by heating the mixture to a temperature below its boiling point. Polymerizable compounds include methyl, butyl, isobutyl, secondary butyl, tertiary amyl, phenyl, cyclohexyl, para-cyclohexylphenyl, decahydro-betanaphthol, di-isopropyl carbinyl, furfuryl, methallyl, tetrahydro-furfuryl methacrylates, methyl and ethyl ethacrylates, glycol mono- and dimethacrylates, ethyl a -butyl, ethyl a chloro, ethyl a -cyano, methyl a -cyano, methyl a -methoxy acrylates and dimethyl itaconate, styrene, mono, dichloro and p-methyl styrenes, divinyl benzene, vinyl naphthalene, methyl vinyl ketone, glycol diacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl methyl ether, methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylates, isoprene, diallyl phthalate, diallyl sebacate, triallyl phosphate, diallyl carbonate, esters of dihydric alcohols and phenols, a -methyl styrene, methacrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride and methyl isopropenyl ketone alone or as admixtures of two or more. Colouring matter, plasticizers, modifiers and catalysts, e.g. benzoyl, acetyl, acetyl-benzoyl, caprylyl or silver peroxides, persulphates, perborates or percarbonates may be added.
