[Class 122(v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A packing arranged between inner and outer components A, E, of a machine and which permits rotary and axial displacement of the components relative to one another, is secured to or contacts one of the components E, and bears against an abutment B on the other, and comprises at least one resilient diaphragm 1 secured between two concentric rings 2, 3, one or both of which have a contact face G and a convex face against which the diaphragm can bear when it is deformed. The packing is assembled under tension due to axial resilient deformation of the diaphragm so that the ring 2 engages the component E, the face G of the ring 3 being held continuously against the abutment B thus ensuring fluid tightness though permitting relative rotational movements between the components. The face G is held in engagement with the abutment with a pressure resulting from the resilient tension of the diaphragm 1 and the pressure P of the fluid itself, although the resilient tension of the diaphragm alone is sufficient. Various embodiments are shown including the use of elastic washers with the diaphragm, the provision of lubricating passages on the face G, and the use of several packings in one unit (Fig. 42) which may be used as an elastic and fluid-tight bearing or thrust block (see Group XXXIV).
