[Class 38 (iv)] In an A.C. ship propulsion system of the kind in which the field winding of the synchronous-induction propeller motor is normally energized in series with the field winding of the alternator, starting is effected by first connecting the alternator field for increased excitation, if necessary in series with a resistor, across the source of exciting current until the motor reaches synchronous speed, after which the motor field is connected in series with resistance across the source. The excitation of the alternator is then reduced, firstly by introducing or increasing resistance in series with its field and thereafter by connecting the motor and alternator fields in series across the source.
