[Class 38 (iv)] The power consumption of an electrode boiler is maintained constant by varying a throttle in the steam outlet so as to vary the level of the water surrounding the electrodes. A wattmeter movement 51 acting against a spring 57 set against a scale 61, has contacts 62, 64, 65 which control a reversing relay 72 to control an induction motor 74 driving a throttle valve 75 in the steam exhaust from the inner vessel 2 of the boiler. Variation in steam pressure varies the water level within the vessel 2 to correct the power input. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the inner vessel is made separate from the reservoir which is itself provided with a known electrical level control for the feed water.
