[Class 121] Isinglass finings are prepared by subjecting a mixture of discrete isinglass, suitable solvents and preservatives and water to violent and continuous agitation in a mixing vessel 4 by the action of a centrifuge 1 arranged in the bulk of the material essentially at or near the lowest level thereof, which forces the material outwards over the bottom of the mixing vessel towards the surrounding side wall or walls and clears away any solute material which may tend to adhere to the bottom and keeps it in circulation. The centrifuge is provided with an openended axial inlet (3 in an extension 8, Fig. 3, not shown), integral with and extending upwards from the centrifuge to a level above the peripheral zone where the centrifuge discharges on to the bottom of the vessel, the centrifuge operating to draw the mixture down from the upper part of the vessel through the inlet. A second centrifuge 12 may also be provided. In an example, a vat of 1080 gallons capacity is filled with water to a third capacity and there is then added 56 lbs. of isinglass, 10 lbs. of tartaric acid in crystal, granulated or powder form, 40 pints of H 2 SO 3 or 30 lbs. of potassium meta bisulphite. The mixture is then circulated and centrifuged for about 1 hour when the isinglass is reduced to a smooth condition and the remaining two-thirds bulk of water is then added whilst the centrifuge continues. The apparatus referred to is described and claimed in Specification. 653,261, [Croup II]. Specification 432,159 also is referred to.
