[Class 7(ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a single-acting compression-ignition engine wherein side rods 9, 10 and 11, 12 are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of each cylinder unit and are attached to the yoke 8 of a piston 7 controling exhaust ports, the rods are articulated through slidable crossheads 15, 16 to connecting rods 17, 18 operating on secondary cranks 19, 20. The main piston 1, which controls the scavenge air ports 22 and is connected to the crankshaft 5 through a piston rod 2, crosshead 3 and connecting rod 4, may be of a different diameter from piston 7 and be withdrawn from the engine through scavenge space 24 (see Group XXVI).
