[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 7, 1949.] [Class 39 (i)] In an electrostatic precipitator of the twofield type, the ionizer comprises a plurality of spaced elongated cylindrical electrodes and relatively fine ionizing wires; the cylindrical electrodes are rotatable about their axes and liquid, such as oil, is directed on to their surfaces for cleaning purposes and to prevent backionization. The cylindrical electrodes 20 are rotated by means of a chain drive. Nozzles 37, connected to a common supply pipe feed liquid to the tops of the electrodes 20. Associated with each electrode 20 is a flat resilient strip 34 of phosphor bronze which lightly presses against the electrode surface, and which functions both as a scraper and to spread the liquid over the electrode as a fine film. Electrical control devices may be provided to automatically effect rotation of the electrodes, and discharge of liquid at predetermined time intervals and for predetermined periods of time. The precipitator may be de-energized and the gas flow interrupted during the cleaning periods.
