[Class 106 (i)] Apparatus for comparing and classifying record cards comprises card reading means producing timed electric pulses representing card items, registers comprising electric relays for holding representations of card items, comparing relays arranged in pairs, one relay in each pair being energized when the pulses responsive to the compared items are not simultaneous and neither relay being energized when the pulses are simultaneous, and control means operated differently according to which comparing relay of a pair has been energized. The machine described comprises a magazine 356, Fig. 2, for primary cards which are fed past two sets of reading brushes BP1 and BP2, and a magazine 355 for secondary cards which are also read twice by brushes BS1 and BS2. Electromagnets SelP and SelS control flexible guiding strips determining whether primary cards shall pass to pockets 101 or 102 or secondary cards to pockets 103 and 104 respectively. A deflector 105 can be hand set to cause primary cards destined for the pocket 102 to pass on to the pocket 103, thus merging them with selected secondary cards. The card data comparing means may be set up directly by timed impulses from the card reading brushes, and/or data representations may be held in sets of relays which, subsequently, control read-out mechanism to reproduce the timed impulses. The latter means includes commutator devices, Fig. 4, each comprising a series of units on a shaft 7, each unit consisting of a holder 80 and brush 85 passing over a series of separate contacts 631, electrically coupled to a second holder and brush 84 engaging a continuous conductor 605, Fig. 6. The commutator rotates in synchronism with the passage of a card beneath reading brushes 601, so that when a hole in the card is sensed a circuit is completed to the corresponding magnet 611 the energization of which establishes a holding circuit through a related contact 611a. During a subsequent cycle of the commutator, the completed circuit representing the data read from the card will cause a corresponding impulse at the plug point 662 which normally will be connected to the data comparing means. The means for comparing card data and controlling the clutch magnets governing card feeding accordingly, comprises an arrangement of magnets and contacts, Fig. 7. For each denomination of the data concerned timed impulses, derived directly from the reading brushes or from a read-out commutator, reach plug points 238 and 239, causing energization of magnets 240 and 241. If the compared data .differs and (e.g.) magnet 240 is energized before magnet 241, contacts 298 are transferred (to the dotted position) and an impulse from a contact breaker 47 now travels via contacts 252a, 295, 299, 298, 294 to energize magnets 244, 245. Through contacts 244a a magnet 252 is also energized and this establishes a holding circuit and also opens the contacts 252a so that when the magnet 241 becomes energized no path is provided for the energization of the corresponding magnets 246, 247. Magnets 245 and 247 and corresponding magnets in other denominations control contacts 245a, 247a ... &c. in a testing network through which an impulse is passed to determine the result of the comparison, potential from the connection 615 being carried to the terminal 623 in the case of equality or to terminals 624 or 625 for the other possibilities. The four sets of reading brushes and the read-out devices provide for a number of possible comparisons and in the embodiment described a plugboard provides considerable flexibility in machine operations. The results of comparisons, besides controlling the clutch control magnets to stop and start the primary and secondary card feeding means, and the deflector magnets SelP and SelS, may cause the stopping of the machine.
