Class 20(iii) [Also in Group XXV] Mechanism for imparting rectilinear movement to a member such as a motor vehicle window, door, roof, bonnet, boot or folding head, comprises a pair of guide bars 1, 2, relatively inclined to each other, a pair of rollers 14, 16, engaging the bars and spring-operated means for urging the rollers and bars into contact. A window 12 is supported by a cradle 13 carrying the rollers and the bars are mounted on a base 3, bar 1 being free to swing about a pivot 5. In channel form it partly surrounds a notched bar 4 which is supported by pins 6, 7, in inclined slots 8, 9, in the channel. Roller 14 is mounted in a stirrup 17 biassed towards the right by a spring 18 anchored to the cradle. Depression of the bar by means of a handle portion 11 withdraws notched bar 4 from a waisted part of the roller which is thereby enabled by the pull of the spring to run up the track formed by the channel edges of bar 1, thus raising the window. On moving the handle within the slot of an escutcheon plate 2 away from the fixed bar 2 so that the bars converge downwardly the window descends when the handle is depressed to free the roller. A modification, Fig. 6, comprising two bars 33, 34 pivoted on pins 35, 36, has rollers 30, 31, urged by a connecting spring 32 against their outer faces, the bars being rocked into mutually convergent or divergent positions by a handle which turns a disc 41 with a cam slot 40, a stud 38 on an extension of bar 33 projecting through a slot 39 in an extension of bar 34 and the cam slot. A lever 46 having at its outer end a pin 53 engaging a slot 54 in the window cradle has an apertured boss surrounding the handle spindle 42 between which and the inner face of the boss a coiled spring is expanded to hold the lever frictionally against rotation, until by turning the handle slightly the end wall of a slot in the spindle presses against the inturned end of the spring which collapses sufficiently to release its grip and free the lever.
