"Abnormal" addition of hydrogen bromide to organic compounds containing one or more olefinic double bonds is effected under the influence of a silent electric discharge for a period of time not exceeding 15 minutes. The discharge may be effected by an alternating current of 50-500 cycles/second and under 10,000-20,000 volts. An excess of hydrogen bromide is preferably present and inert diluents, e.g. nitrogen, methane and other hydrocarbons may also be added. The process may be effected under elevated temperature and may be applied to the treatment of ethene, propene, butenes, pentenes, hexenes, octenes, decenes, dodecenes, butadiene, isoprene, pentadiene, vinyl chloride, allyl chloride, mixtures thereof and mixtures of alkenes and alkanes.
