671,438. Engines using alternative fuels. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 29, 1950 [Oct. 4, 1949], No. 25455/49. Class 7(ii) In a dual-fuel engine operating alternatively as a diesel engine or a gas engine, a resilient, lost-motion link 3 is arranged between a speed governor 9 and the liquidfuel control-rod 4 which, during operation on gas fuel, is held by a trip mechanism 1 to allow the governor to control the gas supply while keeping the quantity of liquid fuel to the minimum required for pilot injection, the trip mechanism 1 being actuated by the governor to release said link when the engine speed falls below a predetermined value to enable the governor to resume positive control of the liquid fuel for diesel operation. The governor 9 is connected by links 11, 14, 15, to the gas control valve 16 and by links 19, 21, 24 to the link 3 which is connected to the fuel pump control rod 4. For gas operation, a freely-pivoted lever 28 is operated manually to move the outer member of the link 3 down until a collar 2 thereon is engaged by the catch 1. The governor 9 then controls the gas valve only, the movements of the rod 24 being absorbed by the spring 25. If the engine speed drops below a predetermined value, a shoulder 26 trips the catch 1 to release the member 3 to permit the movements of the rod 24 to be transmitted to the control rod 4. The tripping of the catch 1 closes a.switch 30 to operate a visual and/or audible alarm.
