672,606. Tufting-machines. COMYN, B. D. Oct. 17, 1950, No. 25293/50. Class 42(ii). In a machine for securing a blanket of fibres g to a hessian or other fabric base c by forcing a sufficient number of the fibres through the base by means of barbed needles k, two driven rollers m, n are provided close to and on either side of the row of needles to press the blanket and retain it at the required thickness and density. In the embodiment shown, the work is supported beneath the rollers m, n by fixed members q, r, and beneath the needles by a roller e having deep circumferential grooves to receive the needles. The rollers m, n are adjustable, and are grooved to clear the needles, and the roller e preferably has a rough or ridged periphery to grip the base fabric c. The blanket and base pass to the roller m between another adjustable roller f and a roller d. The base fabric is fed intermittently while the needles are out of it, and the fibre blanket is fed continuously. The fibres used may be hair or coconut fibre of any length, straight or curled. Feeding long lengths of fabric.-The base fabric c passes to the machine through intermittently-driven feed-regulating rollers a, b, and away from it between continuously-driven rollers h, i, j, which slip when the fabric is held stationary by the rollers a, b. The rollers d, f are driven intermittently with a and b, and f, m, and n continuously with h, i and j. The rollers h and j are spring-pressed against the roller i, and these three rollers have fluted surfaces.
