Phenoxy-tetrahydropyran carboxylic acids, their esters and the corresponding aldehydes are obtained by condensing a phenol or halogen substitution product thereof with D 5-dihydropyrans substituted in 2-position by a COOH, CHO or carboxylic ester group, in presence of condensation catalysts. The pyran nucleus may be substituted by lower alkyl and other groups and the ester group may be derived from alcohols of 1-20 carbon atoms. In examples, phenol is condensed with 2-carbethoxy D 5-dihydropyran, the corresponding 2-formyl derivative, and 2 : 5-dimethyl-2-formyl derivative; and 2 : 4-dichlorophenol is condensed with 2-carbethoxy-D 5-dihydropyran, to give the corresponding phenoxy or substituted phenoxy-tetrahydropyran 2-aldehyde or ethylcarboxylic ester. The halogen substituted phenoxy derivatives are toxic to some insects. The aldehyde products are useful for hardening proteins. Other products specified and useful as plasticisers contain alkyl and chloroalkyl substituents in the pyran nucleus, other alkyl radicals including unsaturated groups in the ester group, and bromo-substituted phenoxy groups.ALSO:Aryl-6-tetrahydropyranyl ether-2-aldehydes are used for treating gelatine.
