A method for the stabilization of aldehydes, ethers, fatty oils, vegetable oils, oil we or petroleum hydrocarbons against oxidation, peroxy oxidation and polymerization
A method for the stabilization of aldehydes, ethers, fatty oils, vegetable oils, oil we or petroleum hydrocarbons against oxidation, peroxy oxidation and polymerization
Aldehydes are stabilized with a small amount of a 3,31,5,51-tetra-alkyl diphenoquinone whose alkyl groups preferably have less than 8 C atoms. Preferably from 0.001 to 1 per cent of quinone is used. The diphenoquinones are made by oxidizing a 2,6-di-alkyl phenol, e.g. 2 - methyl - 6 - tert. butyl-, 2,6 - ditertiarybutyl - and 2 - methyl - 6 - (11,11,31,31 - tetramethyl butyl) phenol. Nitric or chromic acids are preferred oxidizing agents. Oxidation temperatures vary widely. The quinones obtained from the three specified phenols are new compounds, the first phenol being oxidized with mixed nitric and acetic acids at room temperature, and the second and third with boiling acetic and chromic acids. In an example, nonaldehyde is stabilized with 3,31-dimethyl-5,51 - ditertiary - butyl - and 3,31 - dimethyl-5,51 - di - (a ,a ,g ,g - tetramethyl butyl) - diphenoquinones. In the Provisional Specification, ethers, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, are also stabilized.ALSO:In the Provisional Specification petrols and fatty and vegetable oils are stabilized with a small amount of a 3, 31; 5, 51 tetraalkyl diphenoquinone. Amounts of quinone to be added may be 0.001 to 1 per cent 3, 31-dimethyl-5, 51-ditertiary butyl-and 3, 31-dimethyl-5, 51-di-(a ,a ,g ,g ,-tetramethylbutyl)-diphenoquinones are specified.
