The invention comprises p-tertiary octyl-aryl esters of phosphoric acid of the general formula FORM:0699080/IV (b)/1 wherein R1 is an alkyl radical having not more than 3 carbon atoms, or a halogen-substituted derivative thereof, R2 is a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal atom, the radical of a monovalent non-metallic base or an alkyl radical having not more than 3 carbon atoms and R3 is an optional alkyl substituent in the p-tertiary octyl substituted aryl radical. The esters are produced by reacting a saturated primary aliphatic monohydric or dihydric alcohol having not more than 3 carbon atoms in the molecule with a p - tertiary - octyl - aryloxy - phosphoryl halide containing only carbon and hydrogen in its aryl group and removing hydrogen chloride formed in the reaction.ALSO:Para-tertiary octyl aryl esters of phosphoric acid of the general formula FORM:0699080/III/1 where R1 is an alkyl radical having not more than 3 carbon atoms, or a halogen substituted derivative thereof, R2 is a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal atom, the radical of a monovalent non-metallic base, or an alkyl radical having not more than 3 carbon atoms, and R3 is an optional alkyl substituent in a para-tertiary octyl substituted phenyl radical, are emulsifying agents. Some of the components are useful as froth flotation agents and some are useful as agents for improving the lubricating properties of oils under extreme pressure conditions. They are also useful as additives to increase the quantity of solid fillers in plastic compositions. Compounds mentioned include dimethyl mono para tertiary octyl phenyl phosphate, beta-chloroethyl para tertiary octyl phenyl hydrogen phosphate, diethyl para tertiary octyl phenyl hydrogen phosphate and the normal phosphate, and monomethyl para tertiary octyl phenyl hydrogen phosphate. Data as to the efficiency of the compounds as surface tension reducing agents is given.
