[Also in Group XXXI] The operating and housing parts of the steering mechanism and/or gear changing mechanism extending between the interior of the body of a motor vehicle and the space enclosing the engine and gear box are interrupted by rubber provided at or near the wall separating the space from the interior in order to prevent metallic connection in both the operating and housing parts and thus reduce the transmission of noise or vibration from the space to the interior. As shown a sound damping plate 3 of rubber is secured by bolts 4 and frames 2, 2" to the scuttledash 1. Through the plate pass change speed, steering, clutch, throttle and brake control members. Secured to the plate 3 by bolts 6 is a housing 5 for the steering mechanism (see Group XXXI) and gear changing mechanism. The latter mechanism operates a lever 9 coupled to the gear-changing means of the change speed gear box and operated by a rod 10. The rod 10 extends through the plate 3 and is coupled by a rubber coupling 17 to a gear changing element 18 which is rotatably and slidably mounted on the steering column 14. A rod 31 operated by the clutch pedal passes through the plate 3 and is connected at 35 to a lever 32 pivoted on the housing 5 and connected to the clutch. The joint 35 may be provided with a rubber lining or as shown in Fig. 3 (not shown) the rod 31 may be formed of two parts interconnected by a rubber sleeve.
