In a method of attaching a withdrawal thread to a tampon, a web of cotton wool 1 is passed through a slot 7 in a mandrel 6 and a thread 9 is drawn across it at right angles. The thread is cut at 13 and released from a gripper 8 as guide members 11, 12 sweep the thread towards the right so as to engage slots 18 in the mandrel 6 and then to lie along it parallel to its axis. Spring. members 15 hold the thread during this step. The ends of the cotton wool web are rotated to wind it into a cylindrical form, after which the members 11, 12 are returned towards the left to press the free lengths of thread against the tampon and to draw it off the mandrel.
