Mineral lubricating oils, for example bright stocks, which have been reacted with from 5-25 per cent by weight of a phosphorus sulphide are stabilized by further reaction with from 2-30 per cent of a reactive olefin. Olefins specified are aliphatic and cycloaliphatic olefins such as isobutylene and diisobutylene and terpenes such as turpentine, dipentene, alpha-pinene and terpinene; the dipentene may be the commercial product containing also terpinolene, alpha-pinene, para-cymene, alpha-terpineol and D 2,4(8)-p-methadiene. Sulphides referred to are P2S5, P2S3, P4S3 and P4S7.ALSO:Lubricating compositions comprise lubricating oil, for example mineral oil, and from 5-30 per cent. by weight of an extreme pressure additive comprising a mineral lubricating oil which has been reacted with from 5-25 per cent. by weight of a phosphorus sulphide and then further reacted with from 2-30 per cent. of a reactive olefin, 0.02-1 per cent. of an oil-soluble petroleum sulphonate and 0.05-2 per cent. of the alkaline earth metal salt of an alkyl phenol sulphide. The mineral oil to be phospho-sulphurized may be a bright stock and sulphides referred to are P2S5, P2S3, P4S3 and P4S7.
