720,394. Gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. July 21, 1952 [Aug. 16, 1951], No. 19396/51. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft comprises an aircraft wing structure, a plurality of gas turbine reaction propulsion slave units spaced spanwise of the wing structure, auxiliary equipment including one or more fuel pumps connected to supply fuel to the slave units, at least one master combustion engine unit arranged to drive said auxiliary equipment, and means to control said master unit independently of said slave units. The fuselage houses a fuel tank 23 and an engine unit 11, shown as a by-pass gas turbine engine, and each wing houses a plurality of gas turbine engines 14 referred to as slave units. The engine 11 drives its own fuel pump 25 which supplies fuel to a manifold 22 via a shut-off cock 28 and a throttle 27 and also fuel pumps 29 which supply the slave units via throttles 35, shut-off cocks 36 and pipes 38. For starting purposes, air is tapped from the compressor of the engine 11 and supplied to the inboard engine of each bank of slave units through pipes 40 and 43. Each inboard engine is provided also with electrical igniter devices 46, and when these engines have started, air is tapped from their compressors to the adjacent units through ducts 44, firing being achieved by interconnecting the combustion chambers of adjacent units. The engines of each bank are connected in this manner in series so that starting of each inboard unit will result in sequential starting of the remainder.
