Class 3(2) [Also in Groups VIII and XXII] A method of making individual relief characters, primarily for display purposes, consists in incising in a sheet of material the contours of the characters, in such a manner that the incisions only penetrate partially through the thickness of the sheet and the characters are not detached by the incisions but remain in the sheet for subjection as a whole to at least one subsequent processing operation such as the application of colour, varnish, adhesive or the like. the several characters being detachable from the sheet in finished form by a simple and rapid manual operation. The sheet may be of cardboard, cork or metal. Individual blocks are used for making the incisions. Each block 1 has triangular ridges 2, 3, joined if necessary by knife like edges, forming the confour of the character and spring loaded plungers 16 are positioned between the ridges to eject the sheet. A plurality of blocks are positioned in dovetail section grooves in a forme and are retained in position by springs. The forme is made for dovetail engagement with the platen of a press.
