Dyes are made by heating an aminoanthraquinone with a halogenated dibenzanthrone, isodibenzanthrone, or dibenzanthronyl in an inert organic solvent in presence of an acid binding agent and copper or a copper compound, said halogenated compound having been obtained according to Specification 703,296 by halogenating a dibenzanthrone, isodibenzanthrone, or dibenzanthronyl in concentrated sulphuric acid or chlorsulphonic acid with a halogen in presence of 25-60 per cent of an anhydrous aluminium halide by weight of the material being halogenated. The products may be ringclosed by fusion in a caustic or aluminium chloride melt. In examples, the dibromo bodies obtained by brominating dibenzanthrone, isodibenzanthrone or 2 : 21-dibenzanthronyl in chlorsulphonic acid in presence of aluminium chloride are each condensed with 1-aminoanthraquinone, followed by fusion with caustic potash or with aluminium chloride in the first case, and fusion with caustic potash in the second.
