Class 68(2) A method of introducing a pile such as a foundation pile into the ground as well as the ascertaining of the carrying capacity thereof, comprises driving an open ended tube 1, Fig. 2, into the ground, removing the earth therefrom, placing a prefabricated concrete pile 2 having an enlarged bottom end 3 in the tube 1 the diameter of the pile shaft being so much smaller than the internal diameter of the tube that the shaft is spaced from the tube throughout its length, charging filling material 5 such as sand between the pile shaft and the tube and subsequently operating a jack 8 so as to press the pile downwardly and pull the tube upwardly. In the lower portion of the tube 1 a number of vibrating means 6 are provided, which are lowered through tubes 7, in order to compact -the filling material 5 below and around the end 3 of the pile. The tubes 7 may also be used to remove soil water which is freed during the compacting. In a modification the compacting is effected by vibrating the tube 1 by means of large capacity vibrators. The jack 8 presses against the top of the pile and also against a beam 9 bearing against projections 10 secured to the tube 1. After the jack has been fully projected the beam 9 is secured at a lower position in the tube I or the tube is removed by means of tackles not shown. In order to increase the loading of the pile during extraction of the tube, the latter may have weights or heavy objects attached thereto such as the installations employed in driving the tube into the ground and placing the pile 2 in position.
