An apparatus (1) including a cutting device (11) is introduced inside the pile (A) and the same apparatus includes a device (4) for keeping the cutting device at a constant distance from the inside wall during cutting. The apparatus is kept at a constant height inside the pile during cutting. The pile wall is cut through in the circumferential direction and the upper section of the pile is then removed. An Independent claim is also included for the pile removal apparatus, comprising a body (2) for introducing into the pile, a cutting device which can be rotated relative to the body, a device for keeping the cutting device at a constant distance from the inside wall during cutting and a device (5) for keeping the apparatus at a constant height inside the pile during cutting.
