A device for use in cutting stepped indexes in books by means of a hand-operated cutting machine or tool Q comprises a clamping plate D provided with jaws E for gripping the back of a book N, and a table B provided with a steppeddown surface C for supporting the fanned-out pages of the book. One of the jaws E is adjustable, according to the thickness of the book, by means of nuts G and slots F, and the clamping plate is adjustable angularly by means of a nut thereon co-operating with a slotted bar K. The clamping plate is hinged to a plate H which is adjustable on a supporting base plate A, according to the width of the book, by means of nuts M and slots L. The jaws may be fitted with opening and closing means using a toggle or eccentric.
