670,875. Discharge apparatus. RADIOINDUSTRIE. Aug. 5, 1948 [Aug. 6, 1947], No. 20750/48. Class 39 (i). [Also in Group XXJ A tube for televising images produced by X-rays or other radiations outside the visible spectrum has a composite photo-cathode in which a luminescent layer sensitive to the incident radiation is adapted to activate a photo-sensitive layer and has the two layers disposed in the interior of the tube on opposite sides of a thin transparent partition of which the edges are fixed to the tube in such a fashion as to isolate the layers from each other. Fig. 3 shows an iconoscope in whichthe X-rays excite a luminescent layer b which causes emission from a photo-electric layer a, the two layers being disposed on either side of a thin glass partition 6. Separate exhaust pipes Q 2 and Q (Fig. 1, not shown), are provided for the two parts of the tube. For use with infra-red light the luminescent layer is excited by an auxiliary source such as a Wood's light, or by incorporating radioactive salts in the layer. Photo-conductive or photo-voltaic layers may be used in place of the photo-emissive layer a. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a photo-electric cell, Fig. 9 (Cancelled), for use with X-rays wherein the luminescent layer b and photo-emissive layer a are used to excite an electron multiplier; the two layers may be on either side of the wall of the tube, Fig. 10 (Cancelled, not shown). This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification 'as accepted.
