Gaseous suspensions of carbon black in effluent gases from furnace black production are cooled by the injection of water in the form of a mist in which the mean diameter of the water particles does not exceed 80 microns and is preferably over 40 microns. The cooling water may be preheated to just below its vaporizing temperature before injection.
