782,741. Magnetrons. TELEFUNKEN GES. April 26, 1954 [April 24, 1953], No. 11911 /54. Class 39(1). A magnetron has a number of resonant cavities, formed by inwardly projecting vanes, effectively divided by means of an energy coupling member into a plurality of mutually decoupled resonators ; the cavities of one resonator interlace with those of another. In Fig. 1 the cavities formed by vanes 1, 2, 3, 4 interlace with those formed by vanes 5, 6, 7, 8. Coupling to one set of cavities may be by a symmetrical loop, at vane 5, or by an unsymmetrical loop, at vane 3. One resonator may be unloaded with a high Q and serves for frequency stabilization or, control oscillations may be applied to one of the resonators. Different D.C. voltages may be applied to the various anode vanes to determine which, or whether both of the resonators are to be selfoscillating ; the vanes are insulated in respect of D.C. from the anode cylinder and have separate leads. Strapping may be provided for each resonator or set of cavities. Energy may be coupled in or out between straps. In Fig. 4 two sets of vanes 11, 13 and 17, 18 are oblique to the main axis in opposite directions, but their inner ends are in the same plane. Movable tuning rings 20, 21 are provided. Tuning of the loaded resonator with low Q may be unnecessary. To obtain a high Q for the unloaded resonator the surface conductivity may be increased by a polished silver coating. Magnetrons having more than two e.g. three mutually recoupled resonators may be used as heterodyne mixers or cascade amplifiers.
