Process for manufacturing a curative for articular rheumatism and sphacelus which is also a sedative

A curative for rheumatism and other complaints is produced by culturing in solid or in liquid media fluorescent microbes isolated from sea animals, e.g. cuttle fish, or fresh water animals, or sea water, extracting the active substance with distilled water containing or not antiseptics, e.g. phenol, or with an organic solvent, e.g. methanol, ethanol, butanol, benzene, or aqueous solutions thereof, or with physiological salt solution or with acid or alkali solutions, separating protein and lipoid material when present, and recovering the active substance, including a final stage of evaporating to dryness in vacuum at low temperature. When extraction is effected by non-organic solvents, protein, amino acids and lipoid material are separated by filtration through asbestos treated with sodium silicate and magnesium silicate. After filtration, the pH is adjusted to 2-6, the active substance is adsorbed on, say kaolin or active carbon and the adsorbate treated, e.g. with caustic soda solution at pH 8-12 to elute the active substance. After concentration, alcohol is added to precipitate substances insoluble therein, and the filtrate is dried in vacuum at low temperature. As an alternative to the adsorbtion procedure, silver nitrate, lead acetate, &c. is added to precipitate a heavy metal salt of the active substance, which is recovered by precipitating the metal with hydrogen sulphide. The filtrate is concentrated to dryness and the active substance dissolved in carbolic acid, alcohols, acetone, benzene, or aqueous solutions thereof. The culture medium may be dried at low temperature and lipoid extracted with ether prior to extraction of the active substance. Prior to or during extraction, the microbe may be destroyed by physical means, e.g. by heat or pressing, or by chemical means, using acid or alkali.
