A head for a grinding machine comprises a grinding wheel 16 carried on a spindle 21 axially movable in a carriage 8 angularly movable about an axis 0' which is perpendicular to the wheel axis and is spaced therefrom by the radius of the wheel 16, and a computing mechanism 37-39 for correlating the axial and angular movements so that the envelope of successive positions of the wheel is at least a high order approximation to an involute. The spindle is mounted in a carrier 14 which, in turn, is mounted on a slide 9 adjustable angularly according to the helix angle of the gear to be ground. A wear detector and compensator 15 is also mounted on the carrier 14, and adjusts the position of a sleeve 21 relatively to the carrier 14. The wheel is rotated by a motor 22. A control shaft 24 is mounted in eccentric bearings, adjustable for tooth modification, and carries a lever 27 adjustable in length. The lever is connected by a pin-and-shoe mechanism 28, 34 and 36 to the carrier 14. The movement of the lever 27 is controlled by a lever 39 carrying a follower 38 engaging a master cam 37, which may be produced by mechanism such as described in Specification 722,011, [Group XXII]. The linkage may be replaced by steel tape mechanism. The cam 37 may be replaced by the generating mechanism of Specifications 691,734, [Group XXII], or 713,524, [Group XXIV].
