725,658. Drills; reamers; taps; milling- cutters. GARNERIE, J. L. Jan. 15, 1953 [Jan. 17, 1952], No. 1188/53. Class 83 (3). An expanding tool for reaming, drilling, milling or truing tapped threads comprises a blade 2, Fig. 1, sliding in an inclined guideway at the forward end of the tool so that the blade projects laterally as it is drawn up the guideway, the blade and guideway being of cruciform cross-section so that lateral disengagement is prevented, and the arms of the blade serving as cutting edges and supporting and guiding ribs. The blade has a notched edge 7a for co-operation with a screw, spring- loaded pin or friction pin 3 to determine the blade position. The edge 2b is employed for drilling and end-milling and the edge 2a for reaming. The body 1, Fig. 4, may have fixed cutting edges 1a and the blade be secured by a screw 10. The blade may be serrated for truing threads, Fig. 13, and adjusted by a flexible pull-rod 14 integral with, or engaged with, the blade 2, Fig. 7. The pull-rod is adjusted by a nut engaging abutments on the rod or blade or the pull-rod may be serrated and engaged by a nut 25, Fig. 13. The nut has a serrated edge 27 to maintain its adjusted position and is held against an abutment 18a on the pull-rod by a spring 24 re-acting against a further abutment 18 on the rod. In a further modification, the rod is adjusted by a grooved sliding collar for operation by a yoke in a lathe. Three blades 2, Fig. 14, may be fitted and be of wedge form to seat firmly in their grooves. In the case of long tool shanks, the pull-rods may be in sections 3a, Fig. 19, united by a sleeve 9. In another modification, the blades 2, Fig. 20, are adjusted by a rod 12 engaged by a threaded end-cap 7a. The sides of the shank may be hollowed out and channels for air or liquid be provided at the bottoms of the blade-grooves to assist in removing shavings. In a final modification, the reamer blade 2, Fig. 25, floats between stops 2d, 2c and is prevented from detachment by a pin 15.
