532,381. Polymerization of olefines. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. May 19, 1939, No. 14964. Convention date, June 15, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] Propylene and/or butylenes are polymerized to gasoline products by contact with a solid catalyst consisting of a pre-calcined mixture of a major proportion by weight of a phosphoric acid and a minor proportion by weight of a siliceous carrier such as kieselguhr, the temperature being maintained within the range of 204-288‹C. under a pressure exceeding 40 atmospheres but not exceeding 136 atmospheres. In the case of stabilizer refluxes composed principally of 3 and 4 carbon atom hydrocarbons, temperatures of 232-288‹C. and pressures of over 40 to about 54 atmospheres are employed. Fractions composed mainly of 3 carbon atom hydrocarbons require temperatures of . 232-260‹C. and pressures of more than 40 atmospheres even as high as 136 atmospheres, whilst in the case of butane-butene fractions temperatures of 204-260‹C. are used in conjunction with pressures of the order of 51 atmospheres. The pre-heated and purified olefine-containing gases are passed or circulated through a series of tubes containing the catalyst, each group of tubes being surrounded by a liquid cooling medium, preferably water, whereby the temperature is maintained constant at any point of the system. The gases may be first contacted with partly spent catalyst before reaching catalyst of higher activity. Specifications 477,128, 490,854, 490,855, 492,567, 496,676 and 511,181 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the use of pressures down to a minimum of 27 atmospheres and includes a table of data relating to the production of octanes from butane-butene mixtures at temperatures ranging from 135‹C. to 171‹C. under pressures of 43.5 to 82 atmospheres. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
