Balloon control means for textile spinning or twisting machines comprises an annular constrictor element mounted so as to surround the package carrier and having a diameter only slightly larger than the package carrier and located when the balloon height is greatest at or approximately at the centre of the balloon and within a range of one quarter of the final package length above or one-eighth of the final package length below the mid-position of the package. As shown (Figs. 1 and 5) constrictor elements composed of plates 32 are carried on a rod 29 which extends along the length of the machine and is carried by brackets 28 from the ring rail 23. The complementary plates 32 are hingedly mounted on arm 31 fixed to the rod 29. The rod 29 is provided with a hand lever 34 for enabling all the balloon constrictors to be turned upwards for doffing purposes.
