A hard coloured mastic consists of a fusible synthetic resin, a high-melting coumarone resin, a petroleum flux oil, pigment and aggregate, e.g. sand. Cresol-, phenol-, diphenylol propane-, aromatic amine-aldehyde resins, which may be glycerol esterified, are specified. Different coloured mastics can be mixed for a variegated effect. The mastic is used by applying it, roughly ground, to an asphalt surface while the latter is still hot, and, as the mastic softens, smoothing and spreading it to give a coloured surface layer.
