A stone breaking or crushing machine comprises a plurality of hammers resiliently mounted on a driven shaft B to rotate within a casing A, each hammer extending between the bars D of a grid to break or crush the stone thereon and subsequently further break or crush the stone to the required size against a sieve composed of longitudinal bars d, dSP1/SP, the bars of the grid passing through the sides of the casing and being supported at their ends by members ASP1/SP secured thereto and to the sides of the casing. Each hammer comprises a hub portion c, Fig. 4, keyed to the shaft B and formed with a circular rib cSP1/SP having a projecting lug cSP2/SP on one side, a striking member cSP3/SP being carried by a pair of plates cSP4/SP mounted on the rib cSP1/SP and connected thereto by springs E extending between the lug cSP2/SP and lugs cSP5/SP formed on the plates cSP4/SP.
