MARVELLOUS PROPERTIES OF STONE CRUSHER DUST: A WASTE BY-PRODUCT OF STONE CRUSHERS

This paper highlights the use of stone crusher as a marvelous building material-replacing sand where it is used as fine aggregate. In those places, where the stones e.g. granitic rocks, basaltic rocks etc. are available in abundance, the coarse aggregates of concrete are made available crushing these rocks into the desired sizes The finer dust particles are collected as a by-product. These varied sizes of by-products pose a problem of disposal also. Previously no specific use of this material was known. Then it was used as a filling material in the filling of the plinths to create floors as a non-cohesive medium. It is available at cheaper rates as compared to the silica sand - a commonly used inert filler in the mortars and concretes. The author has studied the behaviour of stone crusher dust in masonry mortars, cement concrete bases, RCC and has also studied the effects of grain size on the strengths of the crusher dust products. The authors claims a substantial economy in the construction without impairing the durability and quality. In certain cities, say Jabalpur, Bhopal etc. in M.P., sand is a very costly material whereas the stone crusher dust is a waste by-product during the crushing of naturally occurring rocks to convert it into coarse aggregates. It is abundantly available at a considerable cheaper rate. It is possible to replace sand by stone crusher dust as a fine-aggregate.
