757,540. Measuring axial thrusts of shafts. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 11, 1955 [Feb. 11, 1954], No. 4070/54. Class 106 (2). The axial thrust of a rotating shaft is measured at a thrust bearing by providing a predetermined small clearance 11 between the bearing casing 2 and the bearing housing 1 which permits relative axial movement of those parts in a direction opposite to the thrust, forming an annular enclosure 16 around the housing 1, and having opposing faces, one movable with the housing 1 and the other with the casing 2 so that the thrust exerted by pressure fluid introduced into the enclosure 16 on these faces when sufficient to cause movement to close the clearance 11 is a measure of the axial thrust of the shaft. As shown the clearance is formed by a part 9 of an auxiliary housing 8 positively located with respect to the main housing 1, the part 9 cooperating with a groove 7 in the casing 2 the auxiliary housing 8 being fast with an annular part 12 having a groove 13 to co-operate with a seating 14 in the end face of the housing 1 to form the enclosure 16, pressure fluid being introduced at 18. The parts 8 and 12 may be unscrewed and replaced when not in use by a ring nut having a flange to take in the groove 7.
