Dimethyl dichlorosilane is prepared by reacting methyl trichlorosilane with the solid hydrolysis product of methyl trichlorosilane at an elevated temperature in an oxygen-free atmosphere. Reaction temperatures of 450 DEG tp 700 DEG C. are employed and the atmosphere may be an inert gas, e.g. argon, or vaporized methyl trichlorosilane. The process may be carried out in a silica tube which is packed with the dried methyl polysiloxane; oxygen is removed, the tube is heated and the trichlorosilane is passed through alone or with a carrier gas. Examples are given comparing yields with different depths of polymer packing, rates of flow, &c.
