A positive heavy duty arc-lamp Beck effect electrode has a core comprising a mixture of carbon and metallic salts and a surrounding carbon jacket, the metallic vapours produced in the crater by the arc being diverted from the crater by several capillary channels extending along the core and arranged substantially uniformly therein. The channels may be formed by adding to the core a fibrous material which is consumed or vaporized during baking or drying of the electrode to leave fine channels in the core. Alternatively the core may be moulded and the capillary channels formed by pressing thin needles into the core.
