Class 98(2) In photographic gas-development apparatus of the kind wherein the gas (ammonia), after evaporation from an aqueous solution in a closed chamber, is caused to contact the sensitized layers by means of a perforated plate, over which the layers are conveyed by a travelling band covering all the perforations and sealing the chamber, the top of the chamber is bridged by inclined plates at right angles to the direction of travel of the sensitized layers and so arranged as to give a Venetian blind effect to obtain even development in a much shorter length of travel. As shown, the chamber 1 is divided into two superimposed compartments 2, 3 by the partition 4, an aqueous solution of ammonia being evaporated at one end of the compartments and being circulated by the fan 5 through the upper compaitment 2 and returned along the lower compartment 3. The open top of the chamber 1 is bridged by the plates 6 arranged to leave gaps through which the gas passes to contact the sensitized sheets conveyed over the top of the chamber 1 by the endless band 8. The plates 6 are interconnected to allow the width of the gaps to be adjusted. In a modification, the partition 4 is roof-shaped and the inclined plates are held in position by struts. The circulating system may be omitted.
