The power for compressing refuse in a refuse vehicle body is automatically slipped, e.g. by a fluid coupling 38, when the compression force becomes excessive. As illustrated, a chain 29 for moving a plate 17 to compact refuse against the rear doors 13 of a refuse vehicle body is driven from the engine of a vehicle through a reversible transmission which includes the fluid coupling 38, reduction gear 34, and a power take-off 25. The reduction gear 34 drives a sprocket 31 from which the chain 29 passes around a further sprocket 30 to be anchored at 32 to a connecting bar 21 secured to the compactor plate 17 and running in a central floor channel 22. The other end of a chain 29 is secured to a spring-biased lever 33 on the compactor plate. Rollers 23, 24, 25, 26 engage suitable guide rails in the floor channel 22 and at the bottom of the body on either side of the floor channel. An upper loading door 11 on each side of the vehicle slides horizontally on rollers 14 and may be secured in its closed position by a catch 16 and in its open position by a captive hook 15. A lower loading opening 12 on each side opens vertically downwards.
