Class 20(2) A steel roadway-support for mines consists of channel or trough-like cross - section segments which are yieldably connected together in the vicinity of their edges for sliding motion and positive guiding, and which combine to form a support having full tubular crosssection either throughout its length or only at the points at which the segments overlap. In Figs. 1 and 4. the face segments a of a pit arch consist of bell shaped channel sectioned bars which have beaded edges e which engage longitudinal grooves eSP1/SP in a roof segment b consisting of a semi-circular channel sectioned bar forming a full tubular cross section at each overlap between the segments around which tubular locking members m are provided which are secured by screws o. The locking members may be formed with an inclined surface q or an inclined tongue to provide a smooth transition from the outer to the inner segment. In a modification, the bell shaped segment a may be 'replaced by a semi-circular shaped segment aSP1/SP. In Fig. 2, the arch is formed by identical sections dSP1/SP and in Fig. 3 the segments a, bare pressed from sheet steel, the end of the upper segment b being .formed with an inclined tongue qSP1/SP which provides a smooth transition between the outer and inner segments. In Fig. 5 (not shown) an arch is formed having the outer segments engaging the inner segments to form a tubular section over substantially the whole length of the arch, leaving the face segments uncovered by outer segments only in the vicinity of the feet. In Fig. 6 (not shown) an arch is formed - by alternate inner and outer relatively short segments.
