Improvements in or relating to testing devices for investigating the moments of becoming operationally effective and ineffective of magnetically controlled railway trackapparatus
770,211. Testing train-wheel actuated contact devices. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.- GES. Sept. 2, 1954, No. 25560/54. Class 105. [Also in Group XXXVI] For observing the moments of becoming operative and inoperative of railway track apparatus of the kind depending for its operation on the change in a magnetic field brought about by a magnetic mass such as a wheel movable in relation to the apparatus, a testing device comprises a manually movable body simulating the moving magnetic mass and means adapted to be coupled to the apparatus for indicating the moments when said apparatus becomes operative and inoperative. As shown applied to an axle counting arrangement, a plate B of non-magnetic material and shaped to rest across the rail C and a receiver D having a magnetically-operated armature located in an air gap N in the magnetic circuit of a permanent magnet E arranged on the track to be influenced by the wheels of a train, carries on its underside a mass A of soft iron, the lateral position of which can be adjusted relative to the rail C, and on its upper side a lamp F connected by a cable G to a non-reversible plug H. This plug is adapted to plug into the junction sockets of the cable leading from the receiver contacts to the controlled apparatus such as a locking frame containing e.g. the counting mechanism so as to connect up the armatureoperated contacts of the receiver D in series with the lamp F and battery M carried on the plate B, the plug H being provided with a switch S for connecting into circuit any one of said receiver contacts. The invention is applicable to variable impedance chokes and the lamp F may be replaced by a measuring instrument for indicating the absolute value of a magnetically controlled inductive effect. When the soft iron member A is secured in its position on the plate B, its distance from the rail C is maintained constant by the upright portion of the plate being pressed against the receiver D and the length of the track section over which the track apparatus is operated by the member A for differing lateral positions of that member can be read on a scale K displaceably arranged on the plate B.
