771,339. High-frequency transmission systems. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. March 4, 1955 [March 4, 1954], No. 6511/55. Addition to 744,104. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (b)] In an arrangement for terminating a transmission line comprising alternate layers of conductor and insulation, a number of layers are connected to tappings, on an impedance network so arranged as to maintain the voltage distribution throughout the layers more nearly in keeping with that required for the mode in which propagation is taking place. By this means the termination is made more efficient due to the reduction in energy loss due to conversion of energy from its existing mode to higher order modes. As described, the tappings, having appropriate impedance matching ratios, are made on the secondary of a transformer. Fig. 4 illustrates the case of a cable comprising inner and outer conductors which are both of the laminated type. Fig. 7 illustrates the case of a cable comprising a solid central core surrounded by the laminations. In this case two such cables are shown, one for each direction of transmission, the inner cores also acting as feeders for power supply to amplifiers for the system.
