Paint and lacquer are applied in the form PICT:0779351/III/1 PICT:0779351/III/2 PICT:0779351/III/3 of a spray by means of a dispensing device for applying particles of a substance on to a carrier under the influence of a field of force generated between the substance and the carrier, said device comprising an electrically conducting container, preferably of cylindrical form, which has a net-, sieve-, lattice- or grate-shaped closure member of electricially conducting material in electrical contact with the container, there being provided means for feeding the particles to the apertures in the closure member thereof by mechanical and/or pneumatic means, and means for electrically charging the container to a high potential. Designs may be obtained by the use of stencils or discontinuous application of adhesives. As shown a device adapted to be passed over the carrier to be coated comprises a hollow cylinder 1, having a sieve 2 carried on a door-like portion of the cylinder hinged at 3, and supported in a frame 4 of insulating material carrying a handle 5 through which passes a line 6 from a source of high potential to the cylinder. A rotary brush arrangement comprising rods 9 and bristles 10 is supported in bearings in frame 4 and is operated by an electric motor 18. In a modification (not shown) the device is adapted to operate in a stationary position, an opening being provided in the cylinder for continuous supply of material and the carrier being passed under the device.
