703,002. Gas turbine plant. ROLLS ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1952 [Feb. 14, 1951], No. 3632/51. Class 110 (3). (Also in Group XII] In a gas turbine plant having an air jacketed annular combustion chamber, a wall of the flame tube has a plurality of circumferentiallyspaced parts each forming an outlet from the air jacket of which it forms one wall, there being a least one outlet aligned with each vane of the nozzle guide vane assembly to deliver cooling air over the surface of the associated vane. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the downstream ends of the inner and outer flame walls 22, 23 are fluted, the flutes 22a, 23a commencing at approximately the mid portion of the flame tube and increasing in depth so that at the outlet end the depth of the flutes is equal to half the height of the nozzle guide vanes 16. The troughs of the flutes at the downstream end abut, and the flutes are in line with the guide vanes 16 so that cooling air streams pass from the air jackets 24, 25 on to the guide vanes 16. The number of fuel nozzles 21 may equal the number of guide vanes 16 or an integral fraction thereof. In a second embodiment, the number of flutes in each flame tube wall is equal to hall the number of guide vanes and the depth of the flutes increases to the full height of the guide vanes, the flutes on the inner and outer walls being spaced alternately when assembled. In a third embodiment, the walls of the flame tube are slotted at the downstream ends, and outlet shoots are secured therein, the depth of the shoots increasing to half the height of the nozzle guide vanes and the shoots on the inner and outer walls abutting at the downstream end of the flame tube. Cooling air from the inner and outer jackets impinges on the nozzle guide vanes as in the first embodiment; the combustion gases passing between the shoots and between the guide vanes.
