787,910. Welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 10, 1955 [Feb. 11, 1954], No. 4004/55. Class 83 (4). In arc welding or cladding with a consumable electrode, the diameter and rate of feed of the electrode, the current and its point of connection to the electrode are such that substantially all the heat necessary to fuse the electrode is derived from resistance heating. The arc may be submerged in flux or shielded by an inert gas such as helium or argon. The electrodes may be carbon steel or alloy steel such as stainless steel or non-ferrous, and a plurality of electrodes connected in series or parallel may be used. The current is fed to the electrode at a distance of 4-5 inches from the arc. In order to maintain constant the voltage between the contact means 25, Fig. 3, and the work 20, the height of the contact means 25 is adjustable by a motor 40 controlled automatically in accordance with this voltage. In a modification, Fig. 6, the rate of feed of the electrode 15 is controlled by an electronic device responsive to a photo-electric cell or a thermocouple 60 to maintain the temperature of the electrode at a point near the arc at a constant value. In a further modification, Fig. 11, the electrode is passed into a nozzle 85 and the resistance heating is such that the electrode fuses within the nozzle and emerges into the arc 30 as a stream of molten metal. Specification 680,791 is referred to.
