795,210. Separating gases by diffusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. Dec. 17, 1956 [Dec. 16, 1955], No. 36178/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 1 (1). Separation of an elemental diatomic gas from a mixture containing one or more monatomic gases, by permeation through an inert metal foil, e.g. silver, molybdenum or iron, at a temperature of 500‹ to 700‹ C. is characterized by maintaining a concentration of said diatomic gas on the other side of the foil which is substantially below that in the gas mixture. This may be achieved by a vacuum or partial vacuum ; by sweeping the diatomic gas or gases with a carrier gas or by reaction. Gases exemplified are oxygen, nitrogen, argon, krypton and xenon. Mixtures containing diatomic gases are subjected to a preliminary separation.
